Journal #4

Choose two more topics from the list of societal problems / issues you created in journal #2. Write a paragraph about each of the two topics answering the same questions from the Journal Expectations post. Each paragraph should be at least eight sentences long.
  • How do these problems or issues affect contemporary society?
  • What aspects of them are of particular interest to you?
  • How might one aspect of a problem or issue be solved or improved at the local, state, national, or global level?
As you write, consider which of the three topics you've discussed so far has the richest opportunities for research and connections to our readings.

  1. Discrimination was another one on my list that I feel it being important. It affected the time that all these books and plays were written and we are still affected in today's society. It affected them back them because they would judge even more than we do today in color, age, and gender. I am interested in discrimination because it makes us realize that today we can get discriminated, and still remember we aren't the only ones that have been discriminated. It can be approved by accepting each others differences. That can happen here in our school, our community and even world wide. It isn't hard to respect each others differences.
Racism has improved over time, but still has many issues. Just as with discrimination, people are different. Just because someone is a a different color than you does not mean that they are gross, or should be getting made fun of for. Racism had a huge impact on many lives, during the Great Depression. Until Martin Luther King Jr. did his speech blacks were mistreated. One aspect can be approved locally is stereotypes of colored people especially males. Racism has affected society by not tearing people down, and by judging them for something that will never change.

    1. I agree with how you said racism could be improved by stereotypes. But, how do you think they should be improved?

    2. Racism is a huge issue even still to this day. I do have the same question as Kirsten though, how do you think it should be improved? I think there are many ways it can be improved by anyone.

    4. I personally believe stereotyping is a part of racism. People could be racist to a person due to a stereotype.

    5. I agree with the stereotyping part, and I was thinking of the stereotypes that are put on African Americans. There are good ones, like how they are really good at sports such as basketball and track. But there are bad ones and one of those is that people think they have a higher chance of getting in trouble/ going to jail from committing a crime. I think it just depends on the person and the way people think and there opinion and how much of it they will share with others. Can anyone else think of any other stereotypes that would cause racism? Or anyways they could be fixed?

    6. yes racism is still bad in this day but how would you find a way to change the minds of people to think from what they were taught since they were born?

  2. Violence was another topic on my list. It is everywhere around us. So much that some don't even recognize it. It's in society everywhere, on video games, tv shows, movies, in wars, etc. The question is how can it be solved? Whether its local, state, national, or global level it would be a hard problem to solve. It's everywhere now you can't just solve a problem that is so big. It would be extremely hard to have all the violent video games go away, or all the movies that have violence in them.
Bullying was another thing on my list. It has always been a problem. I think it is more of a problem at the younger age and will continue to stay that way. I think that it has been a problem people have always tried to solve whether it parents, teachers, counselor, or any type of adult they always encourage their younger ones to treat others the way they want to be treated. I dont think it matters what level it at such as local, state, national, or global, I think it the same problem in every area. Adults will continue to try and solve bullying but in my opinion it will always be there. There are mean people out there and parents who don't really care. It's sad but true no matter how hard we try it has to be an effort by everyone or it will never make an impact.

    1. I agree. I like how you brought in the idea that bullying is an issue that starts at such young ages. I also agree with your perspective on violence. I liked how you said it happens all around us, and often, people don't even notice it's happening.

  3. More Social Dilemmas

Many social problems that have been around throughout the history of man are still here today. One of these problems is the judging of other and how we treat others. Many people may be different and may look or do different thing, but these cultural differences should not be judged or acted on the way that they are being today. Many people today are still treating others poorly just for their differences and it doesn’t make sense. Why have be not fixed this ever long lasting problem? One way that I believe will help correct this dilemma is to try to show people that not everyone is the same yet we all are still human. Why would we focus on what makes us different instead of looking at what is alike in all of us. This problem is too simple yet too difficult to solve. The simple answer is that scientifically and realistically it does not make sense; why do we judge others when we all are so alike? The difficult part of it is that every one of us are also different rich or poor, white of black. We can never be the same no matter how alike we are.

Another social problem that we humans have stumbled upon is poverty. Many people today live in poverty and can’t even get to their next meal. Children and adults starve and die because of this problem. What interests me is how does this happen when there is so much money in the world. There can be so much money to care for many people but instead it stays in the hands of greedy money driven people with millions of dollars that could help fix this dilemma. But, that can't be helped, and anyways there are other ways to fix this. One, is that we could all chip in just a little bit of money to give away. We could create more drive and ways to give people what is necessary and what they need. We need to all just work together and help each other out as friends and fellow humans.

  4. Another topic on my list was racism. Racism has always been and probably always will be a problem. Some people are just to stuck up to realize we are all equal. Racism has greatly improved but it still has a long way to go. Back in the great depression everyone thought it was just a way of life and didn’t realize how much harm it was doing. Now that some people took charge racism has greatly decreased but is still there. In “To Kill a Mockingbird” the “N” word is thrown around and racial comments are made. Today it isn’t like that as much but some people think it is.
I also had violence on my list. Violence is not a huge problem but it is there. Certain people get carried away and do harm to others because it is fun or they think it makes them look cool. It really doesn’t do either of those. It gets them in trouble with everyone who has any kind of common sense. Some people will just go around and then think “oh i’m just gonna shoot this guy”. That is not right. That person is as much of a human being as you are and probably has a family expecting them at home. Violence does not solve problems it just causes pain to lots and lots of people

    2. Some people say the reason violence is getting worse is because of how much of it is found in tv shows, movies, and video games. What is your view point on that?

  5. Racism is a problem that might never completely be solved. However, it can be easily lessened. Racism is terrible because those being degraded have no say in the matter. You can not be held responsible for the genes you inherit. This topic interests me because I have experienced racism for being half Chinese. Racism can be helped by having children exposed to cultural differences from a young age. If you think that racial differences are normal, then you won't have a need to beat down those who are not like you. Media is not helping either. They depict people of color in stereotypical and sometimes even extreme ways. This can affect people, especially children, to think that all people of that race are like that. I believe the best solution is cultural exposure because racism is usually seeded from fear and confusion. Those who do not understand, can become defensive.

Sexism is another problem I think can be helped with exposure. If children were taught from a young age that they were equal, there would be less of an issue. If children were not segregated because of the sexual reproductive organs they had no choice in developing, things could be better. Instead, children are forced to conform. Girls are told that they can't play with the boy toys and have to be feminine. Boys are told that they must be masculine and can't play girl toys. The thought that a child cannot play with something they enjoy, just because it's not the right color, is absurd. People groom their children to grow up into the "right" gender role. Girls are told that when boys are mean to them, it means they like them. Boys are allowed to run wild, while girls have to learn skills. When a boy does something they shouldn't, it's waved off as "boys being boys" even if what they did harms another. Girls are taught how not to prevent getting raped rather than boys being taught not to rape. This is only a slice of why sexism is the way it is. I am very passionate about this topic because I have the power to help change it and I have seen it happen right before my eyes too many times.

    2. I feel I have to power to help by educating people. Because if I educate a few people, and then they also educate others, then a large group of people will now have the knowledge to better themselves and know the consequences of their actions.

  6. Another topic on my list that I feel strongly about is racism. I feel that there is no need for racism but I feel there is no way to solve it. There will always be people in the world who are racist and we can't stop that. However I think in today's society racism is too potent. Kids are throwing around racial slurs like it's nothing and nobody is doing anything to stop them. In modern society, many people are killed because of racism. As I said, racism can't be completely solved but governments can try to things to prevent it, such as banning the Confederate flag. Banning the flag could help stop racism because it symbolizes slavery.

My next issue is poverty. Many people in today's society live in poverty without much help from anyone. One way governments can limit this is by raising the minimum wage so families don't have to live on low amounts of money. Poverty can also lead to bullying. Many kids today are poor and are bullied because of it. Some bullies pick out kids because they don't have the newest things, so they make the kids feel bad. This is unacceptable because they aren't able to help and they aren't receiving much aid from the government. Limiting poverty is tough, but it is definitely possible.

  7. Racism is another topic that I am interested in. It's an odd thing to be racist, hating somebody because of their skin color. I don't understand how some people can be racist, must just be a gut feeling they get. I don't think that this issue can be solved, not entirely anyway. Certain people just can't get over the fact that there are people of a different skin color than them. This causes some awkward and maybe even hostile situations in today's society. Many people have a hard time letting go of the past, and let that effect how they live today. I find it interesting somebody could be stereotyped based on the color of their skin. I don't get how that can change the way that they do something, or say something. It is all based on beliefs.

Another issue that I find intriguing is discrimination. Everybody has been discriminated against, or has done the discriminating. It doesn't have to necessarily be discriminating against people of a different skin color, but it is very possible that could happen. Nerds, jocks, girls, guys, anybody can be discriminated against. "Oh you are just a dumb jock, you couldn't figure this out" or "You're just a girl, you can't do that". It happens all the time, whether you mean to or not. Hating somebody because they are different, or treating them differently because of a stereotypical reason. I don't think discrimination can be solved, it is just going to happen in everyday life.

  8. Abuse is a huge issue in modern society. Verbally, you can crush someone’s spirit, morals, or even way of thinking and completely change them for the worse as a person. Physically, you can shove somebody around, break them until they can’t fight back, or just flat-out handicap them. I think It’s insane the number of ways we’ve come up with to tear each other down. Heck, we even abuse animals in the exact same ways. With all this abuse flying from different directions-abuse that we hear about on the news, or even in our everyday lives-it’s not hard to see why this is an issue. But the question remains; how do we even begin to fix this? Well, I think it sprouts from a lack of self-esteem. This is either in place before or during abuse. When you get that thought in your mind that you shouldn’t fight back, or that you shouldn’t try to shrug off those insults being thrown at you, then anything is fair game to let into your mind or let happen to you yourself-even if it’s a bunch of lies, or a bunch of ill-tempered punches. But the next, more important step is to make sure you have something to fight back or turn the other cheek for-for me it’s always God, family, and friends, if nothing else. Just having self-esteem and something to fight for can at least cushion the blows of whatever abuse one is experiencing.
Another issue that’s very common is racism. The predominant form of racism we typically see is whites against African Americans. And there are, no doubt, many flat-out racist people running around. Let’s rewind for a second. Slaves were shipped on boats-packed in, and not allowed to get up for anything-and then once they got off, were sold off. They were treated like property by most, and forced into work. It was terrible, and should be viewed as such. But here’s the thing-this current issue of racism can be tackled from both sides. Some white people are racist against African Americans-that’s bad. SOME African Americans, not all, can be a little too inclined to think that white people are still the enemy for something that happened years ago-not even to them, but their ancestors-that’s also bad. From 1525 to 1866 about 388,000 African Americans were shipped to North America. But, to make a comparison, (bear with me, here) from January 30th of 1933 to May 8th of 1945, between five and six million Jews were slaughtered during the Holocaust. Except you don’t typically hear the Jews nowadays being offended when someone makes a comment about it. Yet, people are still getting offended or being offensive over slavery, which happened many, many years prior and on a less devastating scale? Black people had black slaves-in fact, Brazil of all places received 4.86 African Americans from 1525 to 1866. So it boils down to this-I think SOME African Americans need to be less sensitive, while some white people just need to just quit letting themselves be influenced by whatever it is that makes them think “racism is okay”.

  10. Violence is another societal issue on my list that interests me. There is a bunch of violence in the world especially now with ISIS. Violence affects many people around the world of all ages. When it affects one person alone it will affect their family and friends as well. Although there can never be a complete end to violence, we can help it decline. A starting approach to this issue would be to make the consequences worse for crimes. For example, in other countries you can be put to death for drinking and driving rather than a silly little fine. However, I don’t think people should be put to death for drinking and driving but If we had more serious consequences to crimes, the violence rate would decline dramatically.

Besides just violence, education in our country is interesting to me. Education affects everyone by how they think, talk, and act. Only a few decades ago the U.S. was ranked number one in education. Regardless of that, in 2015 the U.S. was ranked number fourteen. The world is growing and changing and our education needs to keep up with these changes. A way to make our education better would be to higher the requirement for students. We need them to be the best they can but also give them the support they need. In order for students to reach their full potential we need all teachers to know what they’re teaching and also genuinely care about their students. Kids need to be put in an environment where they are willing to actually learn instead of being forced to listen to something they don’t care about.

    ReplyDelete

    1. How do you think we could create such an environment that kids want to learn in? A lot of high school students already have a lot of stress, you stated that a way to better our education is to higher requirements, how could we do this without stressing kids out more than they already are?

      Delete
    2. If classrooms are a little less formal people may be more willing to learn. Also, teachers could get more done in class and give less homework. Many teachers waste time in class so this we be a way to better our education and lower students' stress.

  11. Racism has been a huge topic for discussion for centuries. As far back as history can see, people have been treated poorly for their race. This problem is prevalent in society, mostly shown in the crude humor ignorant people. I would like to think that racism is heading out in the world but I can not confirm that idea. This is interesting to me because I don’t get the idea that people should be treated differently for any reason. I feel that everyone should be treated the same, regardless of race or gender. The main thing I think we can do to decrease racism is to stop talking about it. If we stop talking about how being black or white makes someone abnormal or wrong, maybe people will understand that we are all equal and deserve a chance to do whatever we want.
Another issue is stereotyping. Often people are thrust into things because people think they should be or do a certain sport or activity, because of their size or race. This is seen in our society a lot because people feel that once you are categorized into a niche, you are stuck there, and you aren’t allowed to do anything not related to that group of interest. Stereotyping is interesting to me because, like with the past issues, I simply don’t understand why things should be that way. The way I look at things, everyone should be given a fair shot at everything, no matter what other people think. People saying that other people can’t be good at something because of how they look or act, that just confuses me. A way to solve it, locally, nationwide, or globally, is to let go of stereotypes, forget what people think you should do, whether you’re 4’2’’ and want to play basketball or you’re 6’7’’ and want to be an author, do whatever. Don’t be discourage from doing something because that is the way things are, break the mold. Be your own person.

  12. I choose to talk about poverty. This is a huge issue that affects society. It always has and always will affect society. Today, there is so much poverty all around the world, and also all over in our own society and country today. Even in a small town like Boone, there is still so much poverty. Poverty is something that can never be solved completely. There are also so many different levels of poverty. The range of wealthiness to poorness is so vast. Poverty is many times people and families living without warmth, or a home, and going without enough food and water. They sometimes literally have nothing but what they carry with them. Poverty is also sometimes just a worse living condition than what the most wealthy and rich people live with. A family may not be homeless or an extreme case of poor, but aren’t close to living in luxury, so they are labeled as poor. This issue could be prevented partially in many ways. One obvious way is for wealthy people to donate money. Another way to help prevent poverty, is to open jobs, and offer more and less expensive education. This would give more opportunity and care for the “poor”.

Discrimination is another huge issue that affects society today and has in the past as well. Discrimination in the past was most often faced towards minorities. This obviously caused countless problems and conflicts. Certain aspects of discrimination that interest me are why a person would choose to discriminate in the first place. Often times, the reason behind discrimination is because of repetitive unhealthy patterns that have happened to a group or family. People choose to discriminate based on a loved one’s beliefs or opinions, even when wrong. They continue the hateful pattern and it passes down through generations. One way discrimination could be solved is by encouraging as much interracial communication and activity as possible in schools, churches, and any local event. If children grow up exposed to diversity, not only of race, but also of religions, and lifestyles, then the kids will be more open minded and accepting of everyone they come in contact with. Not only will discrimination be slowly disappear, but so will judgemental attitudes towards others.

  13. Death is a hard thing everyone struggles with at one time or another. In every book we have read this year there is an important death. In To Kill a Mockingbird the main death so far it Mrs. Dubose, who dies of an morphine addiction. This affects our society because there are still people who get addicted to drugs, and death from drugs is a very real thing. Reading this book shows all the readers what could happen when addicted to drugs. I think an interesting part of this is when Jem finds out she has passes away. He shows some concern as he asks his dad, "Did she die free?" Then, he turns around and says, "Old hell-devil, old hell-devil!" It interests me because it shows two complete different personalities. I think drug addiction could be improved all over the world if there were even more laws on it and they were enforced more. If it was harder for people to get drugs, it would be even harder to become addicted to them.

There is also a lot of judgement in all of the books. In this book particularly Atticus and his kids are being judged many many people in the town. They are judged because Atticus is a lawyer for a African American man facing the charges of rape. This can affects the readers because they begin to feel bad for the characters being judged, which might make them think twice the next time they are judging others. It is interesting to me because the children who have no control over what their dad does and they are being judged for his actions. I think that it would be very hard for judgement to not be an issue in today's society, but to solve the problem I think it needs to start locally. If everyone tries to be less judge mental toward others, people could become more confident about them self. Then not judging people could grow from being local to state, national, and maybe someday global.

I think it would have to start locally because it would be such a difference, but like I said I know it would take a lot for people to just start accepting others for who they are.

Any type of law that makes it harder for people to get a hold of drugs. Have more drug searches in schools, and make the punishment for having drugs worse so people don't want to get caught doing it ever.

I do agree that it is a huge problem, but I think that is could at least become less of a problem if it could not be all the way taken out of our society.

  15. I feel strongly about racism. Racism is a major theme in the book To Kill a Mockingbird. Racism has affected society in a big way being that Tom Robinson a man accused of raping a woman has been put on trial. Atticus is his defense lawyer, and it is affecting the Finch's because everyone tells them how their father is wrong for defending a colored boy. The aspect that is most interesting to me is that Atticus had a slave, Calpurnia, before this trial and treated well. Why didn't anyone question him at that time? I believe that the only way the racism problem will be fixed is if Tom Robinson gets the verdict of not guilty.

The final theme that I felt was pretty important was violence. Violence has been in multiple stories that we've read. In Julius Caesar, the people rioted at the fact that Caesar had been murdered. In Of Mice and Men, Curley got angry and wanted to kill Lenny because Lenny accidently killed his wife. The violence in the House on Mango Street came from when Esperanza was sexually abused. The part that interests me most is that all of the violence is done out of pure rage. The people of Julius Caesar, were angry because of Caesar's death, and decided they were going to go kill the Conspirators. Curley's violence was because his wife died and he wanted revenge. The last part we don't exactly know what cause sexual abuse. I think that all this violence can be solved by people taking a step backward, and take a deep breath. If they think twice about what they're about to do, than it's less likely to happen.

  16. Violence and Poverty

In our contemporary society today violence plays a huge role. You see it everywhere, video games, tv shows, movies, and the media. I think these all contribute to violence in our society today. Violence can also be blamed on things such as drugs, gangs, and even the unstable mentality of teenagers in this day and age. We are all so connected and caught up in our phones and other technology, that when we see something violent through our screens it does not really even register in our brain that it is not okay. It has become so common that we think it's fine. In the U.S., youth homicide rates are more than 10 times that of other leading industrialized nations according to a World Report on Violence and Health from the World Health Organization. This statistic really interests me because it shows that most likely our technology is contributing to violence in the United States. In the book we don’t really see any violence when Scout is a young child, I think parents were more protective back then rather than how we are now.

Poverty is also a large topic in America. In my opinion, we always think of third world countries when we hear the word poverty but it is present in the US as well. In a study in 2014, 46.7 million people, 14.8 percent of U.S citizens were living in poverty. Things that could contribute to poverty is what the parent is using money towards or their job. A lack of education could cause one to not find a well paying job. Also if the family has a member with health issues, it can be very hard to pay for medical expenses causing the family to struggle to make ends meet. People can also become very addicted to drugs and/ or gambling and end up dumping all of their money into it. A solution would to promote more help lines for addictions and gambling. Our government could also start more programs to help pay for medical costs for a families that simply just can’t pay or make ends meet.

    1. Do you think the government could start doing things to limit the violence in movies and video games etc.?

      Delete
    2. Our government has already somewhat tried to do this by rating games based on violence, but parents will still buy these video games for their children. A video game rated Mature for +17, would most likely still be bought for someone younger.

    6. Are you sure it's the violence involved with some of today's technology that causes the problem? Cause a lot of people, including myself, haven't been influenced by the technology that portrays this. It may just be a sense of insecurity to lash out, or how they are raised.

  17. Racism has always been a problem and still is today. I chose racism because it is a major problem in most of the books we have read this semester and last. Whether it be a small part or based on the whole story. Racism has been used as a powerful weapon encouraging fear or hatred of others in times of conflict and war, and even the slowdown of the economy. Racism is also touchy to some people just because they’ve heard about it happening to people of the same nationality and are easily offended by it. Racism interests me because it’s made a big impact on today’s society and will always be important. I see and hear racism all over the place. In the halls, on social media, and even people who are offended by it will be racist. I don’t understand how some people can make racist jokes but then be offended by it when they hear it from others or read it. There isn’t really a way to solve racism fully. As for preventing it, people can’t just force others to stop but they can educate others about the problem.
Sexism has also been a big problem throughout the years. It has also been shown in most of the books we have read this semester and last semester. Even though it has gotten better from the past years there’s still a lot of sexism whether it’s meant to be or not. Some people joke about it thinking it’s funny when in all actuality some woman do take offense to it but act like they don’t just because they knew the person was kidding. But, the stereotype of how the woman is supposed to stay home and clean and cook all day has changed and that’s what people usually joke about. Sexism interests me because for many years the struggle women to gain equal rights was an important political battle. While the roles of women naturally differ depending on living situations and cultural habits, in most areas women are thought of as the weaker sex. I think we've been fighting sexism with too little understanding. People need to first educate themselves before saying that someone is sexist. Then, they could explain what it does to people, to show how bad it can be and explain and prove that sexism exists to help them further understand and teach others.

  18. A big social problem in our world is violence. It seems that it is becoming worse and worse each year. As the years go on it seems that violence is becoming a bigger problem with kids and teens. An interesting view some people have is that the reason behind all the violence with young children is growing is due to video games, movies, and tv shows. I can't say that I agree completely. That's saying that if we took away all violence in these things that it would go away and that doesn't seem very logical. A major theme in violence seems to be mental disabilities. A way to possibly combat some of the violence could be that if you want to purchase a weapon of some sort you must go through mental health test, possibly like a sports physical, but mental instead of physical.

Suicide is a major problem in our society, especially in teenagers. Although, as I look back on my list I think maybe addressing mental illnesses as a whole instead of just suicide, would be more beneficial because most, if not all suicides are connected with mental illnesses. These include depression, anxiety, OCD, personality disorder, and many more. I find interest in this because they effect many teenagers and the fact that many people I care about are in this point of their lives where these illnesses are more likely. One way to help would be to get people talking. The more we talk about mental illnesses like they are, illnesses, and not just made up feelings for attention the better. If mental health is acknowledged, people could feel more capable to reach out to get help. About 1 in 5 people in America deal or will deal with a mental disorders at some point. It's so common these days, we need people to be comfortable talking about them.

  19. A topic that interests me is poverty. I chose this because so many people say they will do something about it. In reality what i see though is that people wage their war on poor people themselves not poverty. This topic will always affect our country. Not because people are unwilling to work, it's the fact inflation rates keep moving up without the raise in pay to keep up. This is why i chose this topic because it truly is one of the most depressing things in this country today.

Another topic that i chose is violence. It seems today that everytime you turn on the news something else has been shot or hurt. This world has always been known for violence ever since cain killed his brother Abel. Ever since then, history has been a bloody one. Even today with the war with ISIS it will always bee a bloody battle. I think people choose this for topics in books and movies, because it resides with us and reminds us of the world we live in. Violence is something we will always known and have known since the day we were born

  20. A common societal issue is poverty. There are many people in this world who do not have all they need to survive or to live a healthy life. On the other hand, there are people who make plenty of money and spend it on useless things. Many of these people do not deserve the money they receive. Why are there people living in poverty when others have more than they could ever need? I find this very interesting. This problem affects our society because if people live in poverty, it could lead them to become desperate enough to commit crimes in order to survive.

Along with poverty, judgement is also a societal issue. As the saying goes, "Don't judge a book by its cover." Now a days, all people can do is find something wrong with another person. Judgment affects our society today because it makes people believe they are not good enough, smart enough, pretty enough, etcetera. There are people of all ages who become depressed or even suicidal due to the judgement of other people. Why must people judge another person? I have heard it is due to the fact that they need to put others down to make themselves feel better. Do you think there are other reasons?

    3. I do think there is a way to help poverty, but I do not think poverty can be completely solved. Ways to help could be creating new job opportunities or leaving a certain amount of positionings open for people that do live in poverty. I don't think there is a way to solve judgement either.

    4. Judgement is something that can come natural to one person and be completely foreign to another. Some people just look at someone and are disgusted. I don't think any one person could not judge anyone entirely, do you think someone could go without judging anybody? Why or why not?

    5. is there really a way to solve poverty without creating more taxes on the rich? and if you think that way why should we tax them more, they worked hard for what they have.

    6. I believe that you can solve judgement by teaching everyone that we are all human. Or, we could find a greater problem that would need the entire human race to unite instead of crumbling apart.

  21. I think the most common societal problem today is racism. Racism hurts everyone anyone around us. It's something that I believe has been a problem since day one. It seems that is racism has been around so long we would have been able to overcome it as a society, but contact with those we are afraid of often leads to problems that none of us like the results to. Racism was from people simply disliking each other, to murder. It is something very scary in our society that we take advantage of. Racism is the smallest things such as hurtful words. Racism does not only happen to African Americans though. It happens to anyone that is different.

I think the other societal problem is economic issues such as poverty. Poverty and struggling as an economy is something our nation as a whole struggles with. In, "To Kill a Mockingbird," the struggle of poverty has an affect on the story. Not only the story, but the characters. Poverty I think is something that can never be changed, but I think it can be improved. Our world debt is rising and I think it has an affect on the way we interact with each other. Just like in the novel, I think poverty, if it continues to grow, will have an affect on everyone in everything we do. It's kind of scaring thinking about how this problem could affect generations to come.

  22. Loyalty seems like a nice thing but if you think about it, it can cause some problems. In society today loyalty is everywhere! You have loyalty to your friends, your partner, your county, ect. Loyalty is a great thing to have but some people take it to extremes. Isis has a loyalty to their religion and actually kill people because of it. Loyalty is pretty interesting in the fact that pretty much everyone has some type of loyalty to something, whether it be to a cause or a person. Gaining loyalty from other people can be hard but also very, very important. If a country doesn’t loyalty from its people or armies it’s not going to last very long as a country.

Poverty is a big issue in any country. Some countries have a higher level of families in a state of poverty than America but we still struggle with it. Fixing poverty would be very hard. You see presidential candidates promising to do away with poverty by promising to lower the price of something. While free things sound awesome there is the problem of where the money will come from. The price of something would go down but the price of living would go up through taxes.

    1. I see your point about loyalty! But I don't think the problem is so much 'being loyal' as who we're loyal to. It only becomes a problem when we're following a wrong cause or a wrong person. This kinda boils down to the fact that some people have a skewed or even no moral compass, so anybody they want to follow is fair game.

  23. One societal problem on my list was poverty. Poverty interests me very much because my mom grew up living in poverty. What also interests me about poverty is the number of people in America living in poverty. There are about 46.7 million people in America living in poverty. Considering where my mom is today, without a college education, someone can get a well-paid job to support their family. I think that some people living in poverty in the U.S. are perhaps too lazy or not motivated to get a job, and they decide to live in poverty. There are some cases in which families and other people face that could cause them to live in poverty. Some causes of poverty in the U.S. are because of the poor economy, lack of affordable housing, drug use, and medical expenses. There are a few ways that people could help the people living in poverty. The rich people could donate some money to those in need. The people that can’t pitch in money could volunteer at soup kitchens or something do something similar.

Violence is another huge issue that affects society today. There has been a lot of violence in the world. I think that violence encourages people to carry out violence. Violence is everywhere around us, t.v., internet, video games, and movies. What interests me about violence is that people don’t really notice it happening. I believe this is because there is so much violence in the world. There is so much that it would be very difficult to try and stop it all together. Although it would be difficult to stop, there are some ways that people could prevent it from happening.

  24. My first topic is equality. I believe that we have come a long way since the civil rights movements but I believe that we may have run into a bigger problem. I think that we have made it less equal by making it by trying to compensate for the terribly evil things that have happens to minorities in Americas history. we have pushed the limits as far as the press reporting all of the whites against minority crimes but over looking the injustices on whites. In my opinion to over come all of the terrible things that Our country and its people have done we need to maintain total equality and leave no decisions to race. After all we are all human. I am open to suggestions on how to fix this problem.
I have also chosen a sort of hard problem to fix and asses. Bad leadership leaving politics out of it there will always be bad leadership the problem is what the people do during their term to be reelected. I believe that positions are ruining our society by spending and giving money away to earn votes. I do believe that I have found the solution to this problem, and that solution is term limits. I strongly believe that with term limits we can force our leaders to do what it is that they feel is right for our country and then like them or not we get red of them at the end of their term.

  25. Discrimination was another topic on my list that I feel still plays a role in society today. Discrimination against people with a different skin color, people who are a different gender, people with more or less money than another person, the list goes on and on. The fact that people could ever discriminate against another person because of the color of their skin was crazy hundreds of years ago, and it’s absurd that people still can, and do. It is extremely unfair to judge someone based on any part of their appearance, but especially a part that is determined by genes, and that a person has no control over. This issue can be solved by teaching every child from the start that everyone is equal. The only reason someone grows up to be hateful towards other people is because they have been given reason to, or because they are uneducated and don’t know any better. By educating every individual from a young age, most discrimination issues could most likely be avoided.

Respect to authority is another issue that affects contemporary society. In the past year alone there have been too many cases of police shootings to count. In my opinion almost every police shooting, either an officer being shot at, or an officer being forced to shoot another person, is caused by lack of respect to authority. If it is an officer being shot at, obviously the person shooting disrespects the police officer. If it is an officer that shot another person, the officer had some reason to fear for their life, and the other person was not backing down. Once again, respect to authority is something that starts at a young age. It is taught first by parents at home, then by teachers at school, bosses at work, and finally by police officers with the law. Respect to authority is hard to teach because every parent has a different parenting style when the child is young, and as an adult, laws don’t do much good if the people they are meant for don’t follow the laws and respect authority in the first place.
