Journal #2

Journal entry #2: First, make a list of at least ten societal problems or issues that surface in Of Mice and Men, Julius Caesar, Our Town, The House on Mango Street, and To Kill a Mockingbird. Pick one problem or issue from your list. Write two paragraphs about the issue you choose, responding to questions 2, 3, and 4 from the expectations post. (To clarify, this entry will consist of your list and two paragraphs.)

I choose racism out of all ten of my choices because it was a major issue in a couple of the books we read last semester like, “Of Mice and Men,” and a little bit in “Julius Caesar.” Also because it's a main topic in the book we just began, “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Even though we haven't got far enough into the book to understand the racism that will happen, I am still interested in learning more about it. Both, the novel and the play, we read last semester, had some racism in them and both took place in a later time period. Each of these relate back to the issue racism and they affect contemporary society. Some things from the play and novel will be the same as society today but there are also many differences from that time period to this one. What people say, the way people react, and people's feelings about racism are all things that affect our modern society.
I think that people don't realize how much racism is still in this time period. People just joke around with it and say things that aren't appropriate because they think it is in the past. In our grade I have noticed that African Americans get defensive when others joke about there skin color, but when they make little comments about it, it's no big deal. I think that they make that environment for them self by making others think it's ok to say those things. I think this problem can be solved by everyone making the right decision to have a respectful environment. Whether its national, local, or a global level, it's up to the people to make the environment right. It also makes a difference depending on how many African American’s there are in a given place. One way or the other it's not okay to make jokes that are inappropriate or racist.

The social problem I choose is racism. It was an issue in a lot of literature we read last semester including, "Of Mice and Men", "The House On Mango Street", and "To Kill a Mockingbird". Although, in these books it may not be a prominent theme in the books, but it was hidden within stories. I think that it's the same in today's society. More often than not, racism doesn't stick out as a huge deal in our society. People act as if it's not a problem anymore. Maybe they want to believe the world is a better place than it actually is or maybe they really are very naive, but either way, pretending that something isn't happening doesn't make it go away. In these books it seems the racism focuses on racism against African Americans, but racism doesn't include just that. All races are discriminated against, although these books don't talk about it.

Just walking down the hallway you hear racist comments. In theory these kids probably are just kidding with whoever they are talking to, but that doesn't make it okay. If the school was to acknowledge this behavior is inappropriate, it would make a difference. As for national and global, it seems it's up to each individual to make the decision to realize what they say and do matters and impacts others.

A social problem I chose was betrayal because I think this was something that occurred in many different situations in the books so far read in English. I personally believe betrayal is happening today in many different ways happening at any time. Betrayal can affect many different people and it showed how much of an effect on others it had through the characters in the books. Betrayal to me was something that was the end result because of other characteristics and problems such as selfishness and peer pressure. Because of things like this, it’s easy to betray someone because it can occur in small or bigger, more serious situations.
Betrayal caused murder in “Julius Caesar” and “Of Mice and Men” It is something that can be taken to an all extreme. Betrayal in the books such as “House On Mango Street” and “Our town” is because of one character’s actions and his or her effect on the characters around him or her. Today, betrayal can still lead to murder like in past books we’ve read, what’s different is there are more consequences for certain actions now then there was in the past. This is something that can be handled more today in society but can cause a lot of pain and regret. Though the way it is being handled has changed it is still wrong just like it was in the past in all of the books we’ve read.

The issue I choose is discrimination. I chose this over all ten because people are discriminated everyday for almost everything. People are discriminated by being too old, too young, nationalities, race, gender, clothes, job, religion etc. In Of Mice and Men crooks is discriminated because he is black and is not allowed in the bunkhouse. In The House on Mango Street Esperanza is discriminated by people because she lives in a lower class neighborhood and because of her nationality. Today in society some people discriminate and don’t even realize it. For example a boss might look for a woman as a secretary instead of a man because of past experience. He may not mean to be sexist he is just going by his experience.

Discrimination is right in front of everybody and very few people notice it. To stop this people need to look at people equally. This doesn’t mean become best friends or even friends at all. It just means don’t act like that person is a strange breed that will contaminate you. They have just as much meaning in the world as you do so treat them like you would treat someone you respect.

The topic I chose to write about is idolization. I chose this because it is something that has always made me wonder about other people. This does place a roll in our lives today because so many people are starting to idolize famous actor, or sports player. For example Iglesia Maradoniana, his fans have created a religion of him and are idolizing him now.

What interests me most about this issue is that i have never understood idolization. I was born and raised christian and have always learned that you need to cast down your idols so you can focus on Jesus. This is why it interests me because strange things make me want to learn how they work and what they do. I will admit i do not understand this issue but to me it is an issue to some it may not be it is all on how you view the world and think.

There are very few little ways we can improve this issue. The biggest way is to not idolize someone but to respect them for what they have accomplished and what they have done in their lifetime. This issue is happening every day, every hour, and maybe every minute and more and more people begin everyday.

At some point in everyone's life they see violence. Violence is everywhere today. It's on the news, in t.v. shows, and in video games, we're surrounded by it. It's unsure if being surrounded by all of this violence makes us violent but it does make us numb to it. I find it interesting that despite all of the violence that we are exposed to we still shy away from large scale violence like wars.

Solving violence at a local scale could be relatively easy, it's a small area that the police can patrol. National would be harder to control, new laws would need to be put in place which might upset the public even more. Global would be even harder to keep violence down. Countries would probably have to band together, civil wars may be started if laws that cut down of violence violence are too strict.

I chose ignorance because it played a very large part in both "Julius Caesar" and "To Kill a Mockingbird." It caused violence because Brutus decided to kill Caesar instead of sitting down with him and discussing his concerns. I consider this ignorance because Brutus was too blind to see that there were more options than just murder. Scout's whole community seems to be quite ignorant. Most of the characters we've met so far are blatantly racist. This racism stems from being ignorant to the ones around them. They don't understand that just because someone's skin color is different, doesn't make them less of a person.

Ignorance usually effects everyone at some point or another. Most repercussions occur when someone ignorant opens their mouth when they don't know what they're talking about. You'd be surprised how many people are spewing nonsense when they're supposedly an "expert" or something close to that. You don't know that what they're saying doesn't make sense until you actually learn about what they're saying. I'm very passionate about this issue because a lot of people can get hurt by ignorance. The first thing to do to fix this problem is for everyone to thoroughly educate themselves. The next thing to do would be to learn not to open your mouth when you don't know what you're talking about. The next would be to educate others, so they won't be as ignorant. It's a long process, but I believe ignorance can be a thing of the past if people share the wealth of their knowledge.

    3. Nowadays ignorance is a bit different than it used to be. In this age, it is much easier to learn than it was. The internet is a great source if you know what you're looking for. People just shouldn't claim to know things that they don't. Asking questions and being curious is much different than talking while being ignorant.

I picked racism because it happens to families everywhere and even in presidential campains. Donald Trump is someone who is “racist” because of the way he says the Mexican-Americans are bringing violence, drugs, and crime into America. A lot of racism has been directed to the African Americans as well and it has caused a lot of damage to society and to the towns around them. In Ferguson, Missouri the people living there set buildings on fire and robbed the stores in the town. Racism against the African Americans has caused racism against the whites as well. Many people think all whites are racist against the blacks and they stereotype them. I chose racism because I see it in Boone and some poeple don’t even realize that’s what they are doing. I also chose it because it is a really popular topic now and some people over use it and try to make some people seem racist when they’re not.

The two books I saw racism in was “The House on Mango Street”, “To Kill a Mockingbird”, and “Of Mice and Men”. I chose those three because Esperanza in “The House on Mango Street” got treated differently for being Hispanic. In “To Kill a Mockingbird” people weren’t nice the Finch’s because Atticus was defending a Negroe and Scout’s cousin said he was the ruination of the family. They also have a slavery in “To Kill a Mockingbird” as well. The Finch family has their slave, Calpurnia, but they don’t treat her like a slave. In “Of Mice and Men” the ranch has their slave, Crooks, and they don’t treat him very well either. Racism was very common in almost all of the books we have read that were written in the older times. A lot of the racism was slavery as well.

    Violence
I choose Violence out of my 10 because I feel violence is now in a different form than it use to be. People are getting punched, hit, kicked, and even tripped for the most silly things. For example in “Julius Caesar” Caesar got killed for not ruling right. In “Of Mice and Men” Lennie gets shot in the back of the head for getting accused of stealing the gun. Violence is over used, and has been over used. Another example in today’s world people will get jealous and then try to go after the other person.
People don’t realize how bad violence is getting. It’s not just killing someone, but it is trying to hurt someone in any physical way. Violence is showing up more and more in media, and today’s teens watch/see a lot of media. Movies and books people say are “more interesting” with violence. Video games have so much violence that then more people are getting exposed to, to get them in a negative mindset that can turn it into violent thoughts and actions.

I chose jingoism because it's a major part of why the plot in the play "Julius Caesar" was the way it was. Without jingoism, Brutus, Cassius, and Casca wouldn't have come up with the plan to kill Julius Caesar for the better of their country. I think it is interesting because Brutus would have rather killed one of his close family friends than let his country go under rule by him, and after all of it he regrets killing him. This could have all been solved if Brutus would have listened to Cassius and then tried to talk them into a different idea rather than killing Caesar.

I believe that Brutus was thinking too far ahead and was too worried about his country than just living in the present and communicating with all parties of the government. Brutus also could have solved his problem by warning Caesar and then making a plan with Caesar on how to change his ways for the better of the government and the people.

I chose judgement because it plays a major role in today's society. Everybody is quick to judge somebody else, especially when their pride is on the line. It can be seen everyday in almost any place. Judgement has been found mostly in "In To Kill a Mockingbird" out of what we've read so far. It interests me simply because of the amount of judgement that occurs throughout every day life. Stopping and thinking, judging people almost comes natural to a lot of people, whether they know it or not.

A lot of this judging could be solved by realizing everyone has their own problems and challenges they have to face. That everybody goes through something different and not everybody is capable of doing the same things. People have to realize themselves that they are not perfect and have to own up to their mistakes as well.

I'm going to write about discrimination. Discrimination affect today's society in many ways. For a long time, and in recent years black people have been heavily discriminated against. Some police officers around the country have killed black people for almost no reason. This not only effects the black population but also everyone else who supports racial equality. I feel this could be stopped people, especially, in the south need to stop staying true to their roots. This also affects our society because there is discrimination against all sorts of people. There is discrimination against old people, midgets, people of different races and all kinds of other people.

I'm interested in racial equality.I believe people of all races should be equal and have the same rights. I don't think Donald Trump would be a good president because of his views on immigration. Discrimination in the workplace was resolved with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. This made it so CEO's couldn't decide not to hire someone just because they were old, black or if they had any other qualities. This helped the country greatly as it made many minorities very happy. Buildings are also now required to have handicap ramps which ended discrimination against handicap people. I still think there are many steps to take to end discrimination against all kinds of people.

Racial Issues To The Real World Today

Racial problems have occurred for a very long time. It started in America up to its very roots with the use of slaves for the beginning farms in America. It is sad to say that that many people today in America are still racist towards people different than them including people with just a darker skin tone than her/himself. Though racial problems have mended slightly than in the past, there is still many difficulties that have to be passed. One thing, is to prevent it from growing into other races like arabic or the muslim religion. Many people seem to be growing a hatred or intolerance towards them even though the problems today are not caused by the everyday muslim. Another way to try to solve this is to try to reach out to people who feel wrongly towards other races and see why they feel the way they do. Do their feelings reach towards the roots?

One interesting thing about this, is that both darker skinned and muslim/arabic racial issues root to different emotions/feeling. The root of racial black dilemmas seem to have rooted from greed or power. The white man felt more powerful and more important than their darker brethren. Even though they were part of the same species the white man would spit on their fellow homosapiens and treat them like the dirt on their property. The difference of this and with the current muslim racial problems is that the muslim issues occurred out of fear. This is almost an exact opposite of the older and rooted issue of the black man. We people in America fear what terrorist will do to our country and the images of a muslim person comes to mind with their religious terben. These people mean no harm to us, the only people that we should fear are radicals. Radicals don’t come through muslims, they come through many different religions and many different people. We all focus on one type of race when every race contains them. Every race contains radicals, some people just need to look past people’s colors, looks past their covers, and read the content. Only then can someone decide if they don't like a book. This doesn’t make an entire genre bad.

Poverty is a huge issue in our world today and many people are affected by it even in our own country. Not only those who live in poverty are affected but also the rich who get taxed more are affected largely. Many children and families are in horrible conditions and many even die and that needs to stop. While some people in poverty are just too lazy to get or keep a job, others may not have been able to afford the education needed in order to get hired. In To Kill A Mockingbird Walter Cunningham’s family lives in poverty. This problem causes their family to not be able to afford something as simple as lunch for their son. Another example is from Of Mice and Men, many people find a job and have to live there. They all work in order to be able to afford their own house. While these are fictional examples, many people in our country actually live with problems such as not being able to afford food or provide shelter for their children.

I’m interested in poverty because welfare is a huge deal with the presidential elections going on. With all of the problems occurring in our country today, I’ve become rather interested in these elections. Rather than people living off of welfare we need to get people off of welfare. In order to do this we need to help everyone get the education needed to become employed and be able to support their family. The government could support each person for a given time period. By doing so they will actually work towards being successful. This would help them to not live off of other people’s money for the rest of their life. Through a plan like this we could lower poverty levels and even end it.

In order for the government to support the family, the government can give them a given amount of money and a majority of money for minimum education at college. I guess the best thing to do would be to stop supporting them after that time period because then they are kind of forced to find a job or get a higher education.

    9.Lack of Empathy
    10.Sexism

A lack of empathy is noticeable in all the books we have read this semester and last. Whether it be strongly noticeable throughout, or every once in awhile. For instance, in the book, “Of Mice and Men” Curley does not care about anyone but himself. He is willing to kill or hurt anyone that defies him or gets in his way. A lack of empathy is still shown even today. There is an increasing concern for the evident lack of empathy in today’s day and age. A lack of empathy in today’s society can be mild or severe. An example for a mild lack of empathy would be someone’s tire on the side of the road blowing and people not stopping to help because they have their hair appointment to get to. A severe example would be suicide bombers. Suicide bombers have a lack of empathy towards their victims. They believe their cause, which is their religion, is more important than the lives of others. Through this zealotry, they’re convinced that they will be rewarded in the afterlife by their god.
This is an interest to me because many things have changed because of our lack of empathy. People have to put it at the forefront of their minds to do something nice for someone else, it doesn’t just come naturally. Because of terrorists, there has been changes in security like traveling or large events such as concerts. Because the suicide bombers have become more prevalent into today’s society, they have fed hatred for their people and their own religion even though many are not terrorists, many are treated like they are. It also breeds hatred for the nationality in the certain area of that religion, like Syria. As for fixing a mild lack of empathy, people need to motivate themselves to be more empathetic and know when they aren’t showing empathy. But for fixing a severe lack of empathy, like terrorists, there is no full way of fixing it until people can accept other’s belief systems and be okay with it.

    1. I disagree, I think that it does have some empathy, it's just not expressed exactly like we would express it today. In Of Mice Of Men Curly cared for his wife, that's why he felt he needed revenge for her death. Why do you feel Curly is trying to kill for himself?

I chose racism out of all of my ten choices because it was one of the main issues in a few of the books we read last semester such as, “The House on Mango Street”, “Of Mice and Men”. Racism is also a main issue in the book we are now reading, “To Kill A Mockingbird”. For example, in “The House on Mango Street” they treated Esperanza differently because she was Hispanic. Racism is a big problem in the real world today. People do things differently and act differently when they are around someone of another color. For example, police officers harm someone of another color because they are simply not the same race. Police officers also come up with the most outrageous things they can think of to send someone, that is not the same race, to jail. All over the internet and news there are stories about racism. Racism plays a big role in society today.

What interests me the most about racism is the fact that no really cares anymore. People think that it is okay to make jokes about racism, when in reality it isn’t. Around town and school people are always making racist comments. They think that all African-Americans are terrible people. The blacks are stereotyped because others blacks have ruined it for them. This goes for the whites as well. Most blacks think that they are being judged and criticized by every white person that interacts with them. Stereotypes play a big role in racism. These problems have occurred for a long time and will continue for many years to come if it is not stopped.

I believe the news/ media are always only telling half of the story. Officers can not just 'come up' with reasons to put someone in jail, the person has to breaking a law for a police officer to jail them. The officer is always doing their job in the best interest of the person and the people of their community.

There is a large amount of fighting in all of these books. I think that the amount of fighting in these books affects our society by increasing the amount of violence. They show that it is alright to fight with other people when you do not agree with what they think or what they do. I think that reading about people who don't deal with their emotions in a way that is kind to others promotes violence. Using violence to get others to think and act like yourself or like most people. By reading To Kill a Mockingbird and the other books we have read it shows the reader that if you have a problem with what someone does or thinks it is alright to be rude and treat them as if they are not as smart as yourself. It shows that if someone is calling you names or if they treat you like you don't understand stuff you should ignore them and not care what they say about you. Which is not true you should know and care what people are saying about you. So you can set them straight about it in a way that doesn't use violence.

I think that it is interesting to see how racial our society used to be. It shows just how far we have come so far and shows that anything can be changed as long as people stand by what they believe and keep trying. I think there is still a little racism in our society both locally and nationally, but nothing like it used to be. Racism could continue to be worked on everywhere, even in our school system. I think that there is a little bit of language that should not be used because of it's racial affect. Nobody ever catches it or pays any attention to it because it is seemed that that is just how our society is and it will not change. That's not true, I think that years from now people will not be able to imagine what it would be like to have that racial language. Just like how most people now days can't imagine what it would be like to have all the racism that there used to be hundreds of years ago.

  21. Problems: General rudeness to the mentally handicapped, Distrust of those in power, Discrimination by skin color and address, Racism, Sexism, Greed causes problems for everyone, forced stereotypes, Distrust breeds conflict, economic equality, Not everything is how it seems.

A societal problem present in To Kill a Mockingbird is sexism. Sexism is super present in today’s society. It is everywhere from the general person work place to feminism. The world is at a place where women are supposedly put at a disadvantage simply because they are women, I wouldn’t know, I’m male. It is said that women have lower salaries than men do and are held at higher standards in the public eye. This interests me because it confuses me, the way I see it, people should be hired and payed based on competence. If a man is a good stay at home father, and a women is a good business person, so be it. I feel like no one should be forced into any role, and that it should be up to them, and their capabilities to put them where they need to be.
This is not a very hard problem to solve. Today’s society is so public that everyone is already pushing to have equal rights, men and women. On a local basis I am not sure what can or should be done. I think that our town has fairly equal rights to both men and women, or anything else you might identify as. But one can never be sure until it directly affects you. On a state level, I am not sure, I see myself as a simple person, that has no real impact as far as politics goes. Which makes me feel like I need not try to do anything, because things will happen how they will, with or without me. On a national level, people are pushing super hard for equal rights all the time, to try and get it so ladies and gentlemen are all seen as the same to employers, and to the public’s standards.

    1. To me, people view the fact that men were created to be the head of the family by God as: "Oh, well, I guess that means men can just stomp all over the female", when it's not like that. Men are the head, but that doesn't mean they get to do whatever they want. They share responsibility with the woman in the family, therefore making a complete unit. I view it as, just because you're leading the way doesn't mean you don't need your map. You'd be totally lost without it. So man needs woman. This mindset alone would solve a whole lot of sexism and maybe the feminists would just calm down.
Hope that helped give you some insight or food for thought!

    Violence
    Mental Health
    Education
    Friendships
    Poverty
    Loneliness
    Trust
    Intelligence
    Unemployment
    Racism
I chose racism as my main issue, because it is presented in each of these books (excluding Julius Caesar) in some way. In Of Mice and Men racism is presented through Crooks. He has to sleep right next to the horse stables. He is also all alone and excluded from the group because of his skin color. In The House On Mango Street, Esperanza learns her culture is discriminated against and simply because she is Hispanic, she is discriminated against. Esperanza feels she doesn’t belong on Mango Street, but it is difficult for her to leave, this could quite possibly be because of her culture. To Kill A Mockingbird also presents this theme throughout the novel so far. Such as when the children build the snowman, but don’t like it because it has dirt and looks African - American. They quickly work to cover this up with fresh, clean, white snow. Atticus is also hated because he is defending an African - American man.
In 2016 racism is very present in America. It has been 151 years since America abolished slavery, and people are still making jokes about this topic. It has been 51 years since African - Americans were fully allowed to vote. They are allowed to participate in our government just like any other American citizen, yet people still can not accept it for some reason. The racial wealth gap is also tremendous. White families in America are making an average yearly income about $236, 500 dollars more than an African - American family from 1984 and 2009, according to a Brandeis study. How can people not see an issue here? Racism is still indeed present in the United States. All of these topics can be applied right back into the novels we have read, such as incomes, our government and where someone may live.

    Racism

Loneliness is a topic of interest to me particularly because it’s not something necessarily talked about everyday, and because it can be one of the worst blows someone can feel. Whether it’s from an unfaithful parent who gets up and leaves, a sudden death of a close friend or relative, or even just social anxiety, it can be absolutely terrifying and unfamiliar, and lead people to become very different. Humans are social animals, so it has a huge impact when someone is either physically or mentally isolated from others.
But I think how people handle this feeling is half the battle-no matter what level we handle this on, it starts inside the lonely person themselves. Trust me, when you’re stuck at rock bottom, it’s extremely easy to stay that way for a while. People aren’t being understanding towards you, or maybe they don’t even want to be around you-so it’s easy to close them out and just get away from it all, even though you’re lonely. You don’t have to get back up right away- you can wait it out in your room for an hour, even a day. But after waiting around in loneliness, make up with those that either hurt you or you hurt. If you can’t, pray about it. Find somebody to talk to. Go somewhere social-try talking to people. It’s better than staying lonely.

    10. Friendship

Friendship is a societal issue that has occurred throughout the novels we have read this year and is occurring in our world today. Friendship, in the novels, does not seem to last. For example, in "Julius Caesar", Brutus turn on his friend Caesar and eventually brings him to his death. In this case, a true friendship, I believe, did not truly exist. If a friend could be turned so easily, was there ever a real bond? Another example showing how friendship is a societal problem is from the novel "Of Mice and Men". Lennie and George had been traveling from job to job together since Lennie's aunt had passed away. At the end of the novel, George did not want Lennie to be shot by Curley, though he knew Lennie would if he did not take it upon himself to do it first. George did not want to shoot Lennie, but had to for both Lennie and his own sake. If your friend was in Lennie's shoes, would you be willing to hurt them, potentially kill them, to protect them from someone else?

Friendship affects our society because, now a days, it seems to be just a title. It seems like every other day you can be best friends with a person and the next day wanting nothing to do with the same person. There are people who are only "friends" with someone to be popular or to benefit something besides a genuine friendship. True, genuine friendships are hard to find. Many may think they have a true friendship, but many times that is not the case. I, personally, have been in friendships that I thought was genuine then ended up realizing that they were't really my friend. I believe social media is a contributor to friendship being a societal problem. Do you feel the same or are there other reasons you feel contribute?

    10. Prejudice
Peer pressure may sound like a bad idea in practice, but when it comes to execution, it's also a bad idea. According to Google, 75% of smokers were peer pressured into smoking. Peer pressure affects our society because the more people who are peer pressured into doing something, the more people there are to pressure other people. The cycle goes on and on.

It interests me to see how peer pressure is not only used to pressure people into doing bad things like smoking, but to make people make good decisions. If one person is about to make a bad decision in a group of people who don't want to make said bad decision with said person, it is much less likely for the one person to make it if he's the only one. There is not much anyone can do about it because it's human nature to do what others do. The only thing anybody can do is raise their kids not to make bad decisions.

I choose to talk about racism. Racism is shown in various ways in all the books read this year. This problem effected Of Mice and Men when Crooks was discriminated against, and not allowed in the white workers room. Racism is shown in The House on Mango Street when the mexican/hispanic community is grouped together, and is almost excluded from the white community. In To Kill A Mockingbird, it's shown when the policeman doesn't "have a heart enough" to lock up a white boy, in with the black men in jail, so the police locked him in the basement. It's shown again when Scout's cousin calls Atticus a "Nigger lover". This problem affects contemporary society because the certain kind of tradition behind it. Although there were no slaves, the colored people were still not treated the same as white people.
Racism affected society greatly in ways like the black people in the community were looked down on. They were not equals to the white people at all. This conflict interests me because it is almost the whole turning point that the next course of events will revolve around. The entire community and society in Maycomb County is over all racist. They are separate from the black people in town and treat them differently. The white people don't treat the black people with respect or as their equals. One aspect of this problem could be solved or improved at a local level, is to prove the case against the convicted black man innocent. This would change the community for the better, by showing Atticus, a white man, had helped save the black man. What would then help at a local level even more, would be for important men in town to show equality and respect towards the black men. Having the white men refrain from using vulgar language and name calling towards the black men. Another way the problem could be solved locally would be for the parents of the local children to teach their children respect for black people. That way the children/future generation would have less racism in their minds.

I chose loneliness because it has been a dominant theme throughout every book we have read thus far in English. Loneliness influenced many of the decisions made by characters in the books we’ve read. One example of this is in Of Mice and Men when Curley’s Wife is talking to Lenny in the barn about how lonely she is. Another example of loneliness is when Mayella Ewell talks to Tom Robinson in To Kill a Mockingbird because she lacks any other friends.

Loneliness interests me because it is something that can be really hard for a person to pinpoint and say why they are feeling lonely, and there isn’t really an easy cure for it even though it’s something that everyone has probably felt at some point in their life, whether it be because a friend moved away, a relative died, you’re in a new place and don’t know anyone, or any number of other reasons. People can be lonely even when they are surrounded by other people, friends, and family, and you can’t always tell that someone is lonely. One way to help combat loneliness is to be nice to everyone, even if they are a stranger, try to be including to people you don’t know; you never know if they need someone to talk to. Another way to fight loneliness is to try to involve yourself as much as possible, join clubs, participate in group activities, make an effort to be social when given the opportunity.
